Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The average yearly income per family is about $250.00 per year.Haiti is plagued with unclean water, no medical care, no public education and unemployment. It is a fact that 20% of the population shares 80% of the country's income and 80% of the people share the last 20% of the income. That is a startling piece of info that explains the plight of the Haitian people.
The main influence is voodoo and Christian. Lacroix is a Christian Community. It is like an oasis in the middle of a desert. The political situation is very tense at this time, as the government is trying to eliminate Christianity so it can use voodoo to control the Haitian people.
Our Mission supports Pastor Pierre at the Lacroix New Testament Mission, which is 90 miles north of the capital Port Au Prince. It takes 5 hours to travel to Lacroix due to terrible roads. The focus of our mission work is to provide services and education to the people of Lacroix without changing their culture. We are working to provide medical care, medicine, and immunizations.
We also have a child sponsorship program. You can sponsor a child at the school for $240.00 per year.A child gets an education, a uniform, a free visit at the medical clinic and one meal a day.For many children this the only meal they get regularly. We are working with the people of Lacroix to help them learn to raise and care for rabbits as a food source. They have successfully started a garden as a result of a well drilled to provide irrigation. We hope to continue to drill wells to provide a water source in each village as well as an irrigation system.
The weather is warm all year round but they only get rain from July to October.Due to deforestation, the valleys in Haiti have all the rich soil, so with a good irrigation system Haiti can grow crops year round. The farm is planted, and tended by the men and women in Lacroix. They have also built a man-made lake where Tilapia fish are being raised.Tilapia are a great source of protein and they are suited to the climate.Pastor Pierre told us they harvested the first fish last fall. What a blessing!
